Marley: Hi Everyone! And welcome to yet another installment of... Character Reviews! I’m Marley, and today’s review will be an episode of SpongeBob! What episode am I reviewing you may ask? Well, I got an interesting treat for you today. I’m actually going to be reviewing the SpongeBob episode... All That Glitters! Yep, I will be reviewing one of the first infamous episodes of the show, way back in season 4! We got a lot of ground to cover, so let’s begin. Actually, before we get to the review, I just wanted to say that I indeed have some unpopular opinions on some hated SpongeBob episodes. Not to the same extent as Intrancity, but there are definitely some episodes that I legit find enjoyment in, or at least find more enjoyment in than other people. But it’s not to say that I like all the episodes other people hate. Oh, heck no! There are plenty of episodes that I can agree are pretty bad! For example: Good Neighbors is pretty annoying, You Don’t Know Sponge was pretty boring, A Pal for Gary was infuriating, Little Yellow Book was kind of depressing... etc, etc. there are hated episodes that I am split on too. Such as A Day Without Tears, which was okay, but I wished the competition had better pacing and more scenes. The other episode I am pretty split on is... well, as a matter of fact, All That Glitters. Yeah, I’ll go ahead and say it. All That Glitters was not only a mixed bag, but I consider it probably the most mixed episode in all of season 4. I’ll go ahead and start with the negatives first, because I want to end this review on a positive note.

Negatives[]

Marley: Okay, now to start with the negative aspects. First thing’s first, I really did not like SpongeBob’s first reaction to him breaking his spatula. I mean, the moment he tried to flip that huge Krabby patty and broke his spatula, he immediately started... scream crying. Yeah, no joke. We get a montage of SpongeBob doing that scream cry, and it is done in a really annoying way! Not to mention, it drags on for so long, and it amounts to him doing that same sound effect anywhere! And the worst part, there is no variety in addition to all of this! As I said, he does that same crying affect all over and over and over again! Yeah,he does it at different places, but it doesn’t really excuse the fact that it is just annoying! The way this conflict is set up is not the problem, it’s his reaction to it. And as 22Tigerdude pointed out in his review of Evil Spatula, SpongeBob never screamed like that when he broke his spatula! Sure, he did scream, but it was more of a horrified scream. Which I can understand, because SpongeBob needs it to flip Krabby Patties! The other problem with the episode, is Le Spatula. The new spatula SpongeBob has. I did not like how Le Spatula was portrayed. I get that the writers were going with that snooty French stereotype, but they did not need to make Le Spatula that cruel! He really came off as bratty and snobbish, and... ugh! And to top it off, punched SpongeBob in the face! Which would’ve been alright if they were going with some slapstick in the episode, but it was just so cruel, and definitely the worst part of the episode! There are other little problems too. Like, the episode just is not funny. Well, that’s not completely true. There are some things I liked, which I will get to when I discuss things I like. But the good and bad elements are not the only reasons I am so mixed on this episode. And that leaves me to the next part.

Mehgatives[]

Marley: There are plenty of good, parts, and bad parts of the episodes. But what about the parts I consider meh? Well, there’s actually plenty. Like, the humor in this episode as a whole is meh. Sometimes it works, and can be kind of funny and enjoyable, like Patrick crying with SB. And sometimes it does NOT work, and comes across as annoyingly. Like SpongeBob’s first crying scene. Other parts of the episode I also consider to be a meh was, quite frankly, the scene where SpongeBob is Trying to buy Le Spatula. So Fred is suddenly a snooty fish in this one. I always find that odd, but I guess it’s SpongeBob. Then we get a montage of SpongeBob giving up a lot of things to buy the spatula, which is... eh. I felt like that “Now? No. Now? No. Now? No.” dragged on kinda long, but it wasn’t that annoying. It was honestly the most boring part of the episode, in my opinion. If the writers were going to go for that joke, they at least should’ve added more... creativity to the joke. I dunno, something better than what we got here. Another neutral thing about this episode that was pretty “meh” to me was SpongeBob being naked for the entirety of the episode’s remains. Some people have complained about SpongeBob being naked for that large portion. But, to be honest, it never really bothered me too much. Sure it was odd that when SpongeBob was naked, due to giving up what’s he had, he was naked for the rest of the episode, but it’s not like we haven’t seen SpongeBob naked before. Also, he’s a sponge. I don’t really see the problem here. I think that’s all I gotta say. One more thing before I move onto the positives is that... well, I feel like SpongeBob giving up everything should bother me, but honestly, I kind of saw it coming. Considering that it was taking a while to convince that spatula seller. I guess it didn’t lead me to being very surprised when SB had to do that.

Positives[]

Marley: And now, onto the things I actually did genuinely like about the episode. And to my surprise, I found a lot of things I liked about it. As much as I hated SpongeBob’s first scream, I actually liked the way the story was set up. SpongeBob has to cook up a monster Krabby Patty, which did lead to one of the few things I found funny. Everyone’s reaction to the monster Krabby Patty. I think the funniest part isn’t how deadpan Suidward was about it in comparison to the other costumers, and even Mr. Krabs. I can tell he’s Probably just thinking, “Oh, brother! It’s just a Krabby Patty!” Also, I was not bothered with the spatula being sentient. Because, come on, this is SpongeBob. Of course they’d do something goofy like that. I liked the montage with SpongeBob bonding with his spatula, and doing all these fun things with him. It was pretty fun to watch. Especially that pirate fight, which was honestly one of the best parts of the episode as a whole! As for my thoughts on the Doctor actor? Well... funny enough, when I first saw that, I was kinda bothered that it was not a real doctor. But then, I realized... it actually makes a lot of sense, because how would a real Doctor react to a spatula of all things being an emergency? So we got those scenes which I thought were clever. Now that second cry with SpongeBob, which is near the end of the episode. I consider it to be a much better version of this, because for one, SpongeBob didn’t cry in an obnoxious manner. Thank gold. And second, the way that scene was set up was to make it look like SpongeBob betrayed his old spatula, and it’s not sure if it wants to forgive SpongeBob. Granted, it was over a spatula of all things, but I think the writers did this to portray friendship betrayals. They just wanted to do I think in a sort of... SpongeBob like way. So it makes me a Lott more sympathetic when SpongeBob cries his eyes out. In addition to that, there were some legit funny scenes during it to lighten the mood. Like when another SpongeBob comes up going “All That Glitters is not gold.” in a trance sort of way. Yeah, that was probably the only time I laughed out loud. I even like how the ending was choreographed. SpongeBob was crying as it transitioned to the Krusty Krab, and we shortly after see his spatula there’s. Why it workshop, is because, considering how long it probably took for SB to cry lol the way to the KK, it likely gave his spatula plenty of time to think! That was clever! And, this episode ends on a positive note! SpongeBob has to flip that monster Patty again, and his arms get separated, and he starts laughing! What’s funny is how SpongeBob said nothing can separate him again right before it!

Ratings[]

Marley: Whew! That took a while to review, but I really wanted to get this review down. I am aware that I have said more good things about it than bad, but when it comes down to it, the bad elements of the episode have been really bad! Not to mention, there were slightly more bad An Day “meh” elements of the episode than good elements. And, that’s is pretty much all I have to say. As a whole, the episode is not bald. I can understand why people hate it, but for me... it’s definitely a meh episode. Maybe if the episode had been actually funnier, and if it didn’t get so... frustrating at times, I can easily call this episode good. But as it stands, it’s... meh. I think I would rate the episode a...

5/10

Outro[]

Marley: And that’s pretty much all I have to say about this episode! Whew, let me tell you, this review was definitely a long one! I would also like to say that me and Mitzie are planning an every episode review series, like PieGuyRulz will be. Mitzie wants to review every episode of Breadwinners, and I wanna review every story from Cris and Jack’s previous roleplay series. When will the first episode come out? Well... after some thing, I think it will be best if we try to get it done sometime in 2021. That gives us plenty of time than just cramming something for 2020. Just to Ben clear, when I do my part of the every episode series, my Reviews won’t be nearly as long as what I did for today’s episode. I will try to make it as brief as possible when reviewing. So, with that out of the way, thank you everyone’s for tuning in for my review of All That Glitters! This is Marley, and we will see you next week for another’s installment of character review! See you next time!
